Abstract
Pleuropulmonary amebiasis is the 2nd most common extraintestinal manifestation after liver abscess. It occurs in 2%-3% of patients with invasive amoebiasis. This clinical report presents a case with pleuropulmonary amebiasis with chest pain and pleural effusion. The diagnosis was established by direct examination of sputum, in which trophozoites of E.histolytica were detected, and by serology. Following treatment with sataronidazole and chloroquine, the clinical condition improved significantly. Pleuropulmonary amebiasis should be considered in patients with bile tinged sputum, culture negative, and failure of antibacterial therapy. This case report reiterates the need for collaboration between clinicians and microbiologists for timely diagnosis of such infections.
