Abstract
The most important finding in our study is unexpectedly high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D among pregnant women. Hypovitmainosis D and osteomalacia among pregnant South Asian women have been widely reported. Study aim is to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and the effect of Vitamin D supplementation during third trimester of pregnancy.By estimating serum bone mineral markers of Vitamin D and calcium metabolism in pregnant women and in the cord blood. To explore the effect of vitamin D supplementation on anthrapometric measurements of newborns of the subjects. 382 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic with 26-28 weeks gestation with single viable pregnancy were selected into the study group. 214 women who are admitted to the labour ward directly were treated as the control group. On the basis of our results we conclude that such recommendations perhaps also warranted for pregnant Indian women so that they remain healthy and provide adequate vitamin D to their fetus. The exact cause of or factors contributing to the occurrence of hypovitaminosis D in women in a tropical country remain to be elucidated in future studies
