Abstract
Introduction: Use of more than one class of drug by a patient with multiple drugs prescribed by the physician is defined as polypharmacy. With increased number of modern medicine and increased types of diseases, the prescription of appropriate drug has become challenging. The main draw-back of polypharmacy- use of multiple drugs is drug-drug interactions. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the pattern of prescription of drugs by the physician in general medicine department. To evaluate the frequency of polypharmacy in prescription to the patients. Materials and methods: Study area: RVS Multi-Specialty Hospitals, Chittoor District, Tirupathi Road, Andhra Pradesh. Study duration : 4 months from January 2017 to April 2017. Study department: General Medicine (GM). Results and Discussion: The study was made to be a retrospective study, which is carried out by live interaction with the patients and the nursing people of the general medicine ward of the study hospital. The study was carried out for a period of 4 months in about 450 patients in which 41% were of women and the remaining 59% were of men. Conclusion: From the study conducted in RVS Multi-Specialty Hospitals, it is accurately concluded that about 35.4% of overall study population have represented with minor DDIs, and 60.30% of study population accounted with moderate DDIs, and 4.27% of study population accounted with major DDIs. The reports show that the moderate DDIs are of more in incidence making it important to frequently monitor the patients for presenting any DDIs for better management of patients.
