Abstract
The estimated incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) is between 2-3 cases/1000 persons. Disturbingly, in a recent report only 50% of patients with AKI received good medical care. Establishing the cause of the AKI is therefore paramount to ensure correct management. Often, the etiology is obscure due to the presence of multiple predisposing factors. We present a case of rapidly progressive AKI in a young male patient who had a background of a solitary kidney, systemic mastocytosis, hepatitis B carrier status and alcohol abuse. Ultimately, this patient's diagnosis was determined by renal biopsy.
